Tuskegee is a small college town located in Macon County, Alabama. It was founded in 1833, and is the site to some of the most important African-American history. Tuskegee is home to the historically black college, Tuskegee University. It was the site of the work of Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver. During World War II, it was the training center and home to courageous Tuskegee Airmen, and sadly, it is also home of the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment. It is also home of the legendary pop singer, Lionel Richie.
Even though Tuskegee is a vibrant, beautiful small college town with a rich history, it is nonetheless, a very poor town. Many feel that is because of the rural isolation of the town and the lack of economic opportunities that exist other than the jobs with the college and Veterans Administration. Per the 2010 census, almost 37% of the population lives in poverty of which 40% are children under the age of 18. People in the Tuskegee area have a rich tradition of hard work and self-reliance.
